The foreign ministers of the EU countries have unanimously agreed to continue developing cooperation with Ukraine.
EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Catherine Ashton said this after a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council on Ukraine held in Brussels on Monday.
She said they discussed the recent presidential elections in Ukraine, and the ministers showed unanimous support for continuing cooperation with Ukraine. The EU wants to deepen and strengthen these relations, Ashton said.
The EU high representative once again congratulated the Ukrainian people on holding the election, which she describes as an important example for the region, and she congratulated Viktor Yanukovych on his victory.
According to her, Ukraine is facing several important challenges, which the EU foreign ministers discussed on Monday. Ukraine's leadership should come to an agreement with the IMF on a $17 billion stand-by loan as soon as possible and should implement all the reforms related to this arrangement, Ashton said.
In addition, Ukraine needs to guarantee political stability through constitutional reform, the high representative said.
She said the EU was looking forward to working with the new Ukrainian team and pledged support for Ukraine in conducting the necessary reforms.
