Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych returned on Sunday to Kyiv from Krakow, where he attended the funeral of the late Polish President Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria.

Yanukovych attended a service at St Mary's Basilica in the heart of Krakow.

The Ukrainian president presented the condolences on behalf of the Ukrainian people to the relatives of Lech and Maria Kaczynski, as well as to the leadership of Poland.

"This is a great loss for your country. In these hard days, we mourn together with the Polish people," Yanukovych said.

He also said that Ukraine has always been and will remain a reliable and trusted friend of Poland.

Ukraine will remember Lech Kaczynski as a statesman who opened a new chapter in the history of the Ukrainian-Polish relations, Yanukovych said.
